The 2025 Myanmar Earthquake: Crustal deformation detected by ALOS-2 data

Released: Apr. 2, 2025, update: Apr. 15, 2025Japanese version of this page

Summary

M7.7 (USGS) earthquake occurred in Myanmar on March 28, 2025 (UTC). To measure the crustal deformation caused by this earthquake, we applied interferometric analysis using ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 data. The analysis clearly revealed the spatial distribution of crustal deformation.
  • Crustal deformation was observed along the Sagaing Fault within the range of 400 km in the north-south direction.
  • The pixel offset in azimuth direction shows an almost northward displacement on the western side and an almost southward displacement on the eastern side of the Sagaing Fault. The observed crustal deformation was consistent with that expected for a right-lateral fault.
  • 6 m of ground deformation was observed across the Sagaing Fault.
