Crustal movements resulting from earthquake in northern part of Nagano Prefecture at approximately 22:08 on November 22nd, 2014

Crustal movements were detected at GNSS-based control stations as a result of the earthquake that occurred in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture on November 22nd, 2014 (M6.7, maximum seismic intensity 6 lower).

Outline

In relation to the earthquake that occurred in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture at approximately 22:08 on November 22nd, 2014 (M6.7, depth: 5km, maximum seismic intensity 6 lower in Japanese scale), as a result of analysis of data observed at GNSS-based control stations around the earthquake source region (using data taken until 9:00 a.m. on November 23rd), large movements were detected of approximately 29cm in a southeasterly direction and approximately 12cm in a vertical direction (subsidence) (both tentative values) at the Hakuba GNSS-based control station close to the earthquake source (in Hakuba Village, Kitaazumi District, Nagano Prefecture).
The crustal movements observed this time harmonize with the earthquake source fault mechanism obtained based on the seismograph data.
We will continue carefully observing crustal movements by means of GNSS-based control stations.
Please note that results of analysis are subject to change based on careful examination going forwards.
