Japan Recognized as a World Leader In Global Environmental Mapping and Innovative International Environmental Education
On Day 1 at the Global Mapping Forum, Professor D. R. Fraser Taylor, one of the worlds leading cartographers and Chair of the International Steering Committee for Global Mapping, of Canada publicly recognized Japan’s leadership in Global Environmental Mapping. This was in response to a speech by Minister Tetsuzo Fuyushiba after a day of presentations by leading government, academics and industry figures, and by the release of two new Global Map in Percent Tree Cover and Land Cover on Earth Day (June 5).

The Forum is being held at the United Nations University and concludes on Saturday June 7th with an event being held at Keio Futsubu and Chutobu School. Global Map coverage will be used by both the Japanese school and by Princess Chulabhorn’s College, Nakhon Si Thammarat school in Thailand to discuss live, by videoconference, the environmental challenges facing both countries. Professor Taylor praised this innovative international environmental education initiative and said that the rest of the world has much to learn from Japan in this respect.
